Why join
As Chief Executive, who do you turn to for challenging, provocative and insightful discussions on the challenges that you are facing? Sometimes staff, the Minister, boards, control agencies, or consultants - but these relationships are complex making frank discussion difficult. Moreover, they often lack the experiences and insight of the challenges facing a chief executive. The OD Clinics provide you with a confidential sounding board of other Chief Executives to hone your ideas. They also provide you with the opportunity to jointly engage with other Chief Executives to help colleagues with complex issues. So participating enables you to:
- Develop your capability as a Chief Executive
- Hold rich discussions on complex issues with supportive, like minded colleagues
- Support the development of the public sector
- Build valuable, collegial relationships with other Chief Executives
Eligibility
The OD Clinic is open to Chief Executives of public organizations including public service departments, state services, statutory entities, crown agents, autonomous crown entities, independent crown entities, crown entity companies, tertiary education institutions, Public Finance Act Fourth Schedule organisations, Reserve Bank of New Zealand, Offices of Parliament and state-owned enterprises
Process
The usual process is for one Chief Executive to present their strategic challenge, and the other Chief Executives to share their ideas and experience to assist their colleague. In the process, all attendees learn from their colleagues. At the following meeting there is a follow up on the progress made from the colleague who presented at the previous clinic, before moving on to a new challenge presented by another member of the group. The meetings are facilitated by an expert in organisation development (OD) and facilitation.
Frequency
The groups determine how often they wish to meet, for how long, the focus of their workshops, and when it is time for the group to disband and reform with other members. The suggested format is to have a breakfast meeting or lunch meeting for 75 minutes once per week or per fortnight for 16 sessions. With eight members in a group, this allows two strategic issues to be presented by each participant. With absences each meeting is likely to be attended by five to six colleagues.
Commitment
Enrolment in the OD Clinic is a commitment to support the group with learning and strategic problem solving. While absences from some meetings are inevitable, participants are expected to make an effort to consistently attend.
Confidentiality
The OD Clinics are facilitated to manage the process, and are run under Chatham House Rules.
